Rainwater Reuse and Recharge

The Town of Bellingham DPW in cooperation with the Charles River Watershed Association and American Nation Power Bellingham has supported the funding of a pilot study of a new rainwater collection system designed to collect roof run off for lawn and garden irrigation.  The pilot study is nearing completion and the system, known commercially as SmartStorm, is now available for purchase.

SmartStorm includes: a roof runoff collection system, first flush diversion system, cistern holding tanks, pump, and overflow recharge system.

Reportedly the cost of a SmartStorm system is in line with the cost of installation of a private well.  Private wells reduce the demand on the Town’s water supply system but also lower the aquifer causing an overall adverse effect.

SmartStorm is being distributed and installed by:

Rainwater Recovery Systems LLC

48 Woerd Avenue

Waltham, MA 02453

Another less comprehensive and very inexpensive rain barrel system is available from:

The New England Rain Barrel Company

131˝ Lynnfield Street

Peabody, MA 01960

Anyone interested in more information about these systems should contact the above noted firms.

The DPW does not specifically recommend any specific system but supports any system that prevents the rapid runoff of rainwater.  Systems like these, protect the natural water cycle and thereby support a healthy aquifer and minimize demand on the Town’s water supply system.
