Want to Change Your Medicare Health Plan?

During the month of March, you have one chance to change your Medicare Health Plan.  Your new coverage would start the first of April.  However, during this time you cannot add nor drop Medicare drug coverage (Part D).  Special rules apply to members of Prescription Advantage, MassHealth, and anyone qualifying for “extra help” (LIS) with the costs of Medicare Part D. After March 31, your next chance to change your Medicare Health Plan in 2008 will be from November 15 through December 31, the Medicare Annual Open Enrollment Period, and your new coverage will start January 1, 2009.  There are Special Enrollment Periods for persons first becoming eligible for Medicare, and persons who involuntarily lose health insurance.  If you have special circumstances, you need to speak with a SHINE counselor.

Many Insurance Companies send out solicitations to our seniors promising reduced Medicare costs and lower co-payments.  These solicitations usually include a post card for you to mail back or ask you to call a phone number to schedule an appointment.

You need to remember that once you return a post card or a phone call, your name goes on a list that allows that company to call you and schedule an appointment at your home to discuss important issues that could affect your Medicare coverage.  Be careful when returning any post card or phone call.  If you are called to schedule an appointment at your home, give your SHINE (Serving the Health Information Needs of Elders) office at 508-966-0398 call to discuss your current coverage before you sign any papers.  Sponsored by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs in partnership with the Friends of the Milford Senior Center, Massachusetts Councils on Aging and other local agencies.

Have A Laugh . . . .

Working people frequently ask retired people what they do to make their days interesting.  Well for example, the other day I went into town and went into a shop.  I was only in there for about 5 minutes and when I came out there was a cop writing out a parking ticket.  I went up to him and said, “Come on man, how about giving a senior citizen a break?”  He ignored me and continued writing the ticket.  I called him a nasty name.  He glared at me and started writing another ticket for having worn tires.  So I called him another nasty name.  He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first.  Then he started writing a third ticket.  This went on for about 20 minutes.  The more I abused him, the more tickets he wrote.  Personally, I didn’t care.  I came into town by bus.  I try to have a little fun each day now that I’m retired.  It’s important at my age . . . . SENIOR TRAVELERS

A travel agent looked up from his desk to see an old lady and an old gentleman peering in the shop window at the posters showing the glamorous destinations around the world.

The agent had had a good week and the dejected couple looking in the window gave him a rare feeling of generosity.  He called them into his shop:  “I know that on your pension you could never hope to have a holiday, so I am sending you off to a fabulous resort at my expense, and I won’t take no for an answer.”

He took them inside and asked his secretary to write two flight tickets and book a room in a five star hotel.  They, as can be expected, gladly accepted, and were off!

About a month later the little old lady came in to his shop.  “And how did you like your holiday?” he asked eagerly.

“The flight was exciting and the room was lovely,” she said.  “I’ve come to thank you but, one thing puzzled me.  Who was that old guy I had to share the room with?”

If you are at least 60 years of age or a younger disabled resident we provide rides in Town and the surrounding area. Both of our vans can accommodate wheelchairs or riders that use canes or walkers. If you are requesting a ride for the first time you will be screened for eligibility. While no fare is charged, donations are gratefully accepted and used for transportation related needs over and above the Town’s budget. Call the Center 24 hours a day with your requests.  One of our staff will call you back to confirm your information and ride arrangements.

We ask that you make your local MEDICAL appointments between 9:30 am and 1 pm for best availability and give us at least 48 hours notice. There is also limited long distance medical transportation available, funded by our Town and rider donations ($25 requested per trip in an envelope with your name on it).  Give us at least 5 days notice for out of the area medical appointments, more if possible. Someone may accompany you if needed.

We can take you to the market, bank or to do other errands, and even bring you to the Senior Center. This service is provided to residents who do not drive or have another way to get where they need to go and is funded by our Town and the donations of riders. We are looking for volunteers or Tax Work Off participants to escort frail riders to medical appointments and errands.   If interested, please call Laura at 508-966-0398.
