Cemeteries

The North Cemetery in Bellingham was started in 1714, five years before the town. It contains the remains of many of the town's earliest and most illustrious citizens. The Center Cemetery was started later but also has a history of the town stored in its ground. The early settlers, as were the settlers in every early colonial community, were fond of elaborate gravestones and statements and quotes upon their grave. Some were simple but told their story. How heartbreaking but short is the following:

In Memory of
Mrs Lois Holbrook
Who died Aug 16 1799
In the 27 year
Her age
The child was buried in her arms
Let mourning Souls address the Lord
And find relief from all their pain.

The enclosed are samples of their work.
