LTC/FID Application Process 2024:

  • APPLICANTS:
    • All applicants applying for a FID card must be residents of the Town of Bellingham, be at least 18 years of age or if at least 15 years of age but less than 18 years of age submit with application a certificate of a parent or guardian granting applicant permission to apply for a card. First time FID applicants are required to attend a state certified Massachusetts Hunter Safety Course. A certificate of completion must accompany your application.
    • All applicants applying for a LTC must be residents of the Town of Bellingham and at least 21 years of age. First time LTC applicants must attend a Massachusetts State Police Basic Firearms Safety course for LTC. A certificate of completion must accompany your application.
    • A current member of the United States military or the Massachusetts National Guard who has not been prohibited from owning a firearm and has received adequate training while serving in the military shall be exempt from being required to submit a basic firearms safety certificate to the licensing authority upon submitting a copy of the member's most current military identification form.
  • APPLICATION: 
    • Applications are to be fully completed prior to submission. Please be sure to answer all questions accurately. Type or print clearly. A fillable PDF application is available on The Town of Bellingham’s website. An Affidavit for lost or stolen firearms must be completed for renewals only (last page of application).
  • PHOTOS and FINGERPRINTS: If needed, photos and fingerprints will be taken during your appointment.
  • LICENSE FEE: A non-refundable fee is collected when applying for a LTC or FID. Personal checks, bank checks, and money orders are accepted for payment. Please make checks payable to: Town of Bellingham. No Cash or Credit/Debit cards are accepted.
    • LTC/FID fee is $100.
    • Applicants between 15-18 years old $25 for FID or Restricted FID.
    • NOTE: All renewal fees are waived for applicants who are 70 years of age or older. 
  • IDENTIFICATION: You must bring a valid government issued photo identification such as a valid Massachusetts Driver’s License and/or Massachusetts Identification Card
  • CITIZENSHIP: New Applicants: if you are a United States citizen by birth, you must bring either a Birth Certificate and, or US Passport to prove citizenship. Naturalized citizens are required to bring their Naturalization Certificate, which should include the date, number, and location (city/state) of naturalization. Renewals do not require proof of citizenship.
  •  LTC or FID: Renewal candidates should bring their current or expired LTC or FID. 

CURRENT PROCEDURE:  To start the application process, please submit in person or by mail ALL paperwork (application, safety certificate, and check or money order) to the attention of Sergeant Kenneth Jones.  For new applications, you will be contacted in approximately 2-3 weeks to schedule a time for fingerprinting, photo, and interview.

Renewals will be processed, and the applicant will receive a call letting them know they will need to sign a printed copy of the application and pay if applicable before they are submitted for processing by the state.

After your new license is issued you will receive a phone call advising you that it can be picked up at dispatch.  A copy of the Rules Letter and your new PIN # will accompany your license.  Your new license and PIN# will not be active until the expiration date of your current license.
