Mission Statement / Operations Description
The mission of the Department of Public Works is to maintain the Town’s water, wastewater, storm water, traffic systems and recreational facilities for the protection of the public’s safety and improvement of the quality of life for the citizens and businesses of Bellingham.
The Department of Public Works strives to provide effective street and traffic control maintenance, deliver safe, potable drinking water, properly treat and dispose of sewage, properly maintain and inspect storm water infrastructure, provide safe and secure recreational space and provide recycling of organic refuse efficiently and economically. These infrastructure and programs constructed and maintained throughout Bellingham's history is ever evolving to meet the current and future needs of our town. While Public Works personnel are considered “First Responder's”, we are considered the “Every Day Responder's” enabling the citizens, guests and businesses of the community to carry out their daily routines in a pleasant and safe atmosphere.
** HYDRANT FLUSHING PROGRAM **
The DPW will be starting Water Main flushing. This necessary operation is to improve water quality and fire suppression flows. Hydrants are generally flushed week days from 730 am to 3 pm. This will be conducted throughout the Town starting in the north and working southerly. Please check this page daily for our current streets by week.
While flushing you may experience discoloration or low pressure. This is normal, and both conditions should clear up shortly. If you lose all pressure or prolonged discoloration, contact the DPW at 508-966-5813. We recommend you check the water before doing laundry. If rust stains appear on clothing do not bleach them. Bleach will set the stain and ruin the fabric. Special rust removing detergent can be obtained from Town Clerk or DPW for free. For a list of streets to be flushed visit bellinghamma.org, DPW Department page or call the DPW.
Week of Monday April 15th:
There will be NO flushing on Monday, as we are closed.

STORMWATER NOTES:
Fall/Spring Leaf and Grass ~
Fallen leaves contain a natural element commonly found in lawn fertilizer, known as phosphorous. Because of this, leaves that fall on your lawn or grass clippings should never be dumped in a creek, stream, river or down a storm drain. Decaying leaves use up the water's oxygen that will harm aquatic life. Also, don't blow leaves and grass onto the streets or roads as these can cause slippery road conditions and can clog the curbs and storm drains. Residents can utilize the yard waste area at the Recycling & Transfer station to dispose of leaves, grass clippings, brush and branches. Illegal dumping on ALL Town property is prohibited.
See Fall Leaf cleanup best practices posted on the DPW website and at municipal buildings.
Doggie Tips ~
You hate stepping in it. And fish hate swimming in it, too! Regularly scoop your dog's poop from public areas AND your backyard, before it washes into our waterways. Pet waste contains bacteria and parasites that get washed to the nearest waterway when it rains. Every time you walk your dog, carry a bag to pick up pet waste, dispose of waste in a trash can, and NEVER toss anything down a storm drain.
