American-French Genealogical Society 

American-French Genealogical Society is non-profit organization located in Woonsocket, Rhode Island USA. Since its founding in 1978, the Society has acquired over 20,000 books and 7,000 reels of microfilm. Our library contains one of the largest collections of French Canadian genealogical and historical research. AFGS is an affiliate library of the Family History Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Through this affiliation, the Society has access to birth, marriage, burial, and in some cases, real estate records from over 130 countries. If you want to dig deeper into your family origins, AFGS also can assist with DNA and genetics research.

Boston Public Library Newspaper Databases - Any resident of Massachusetts can apply for a Boston Public Library ecard and access many of their databases from home. The BPL subscribes to many excellent newspaper databases that allow you to search some newspapers dating back to the 18th century.

FamilySearch.org is a free alternative to Ancestry. This database has millions of digitized records from around the globe, along with a Research Wiki to help you find other online sources for records. You do have to register for an account with an email address to use FamilySearch, and some records are only viewable at their "Family History Centers." Making an account with FamilySearch does allow you to make your own family tree, unlike Ancestry Library Edition.
