Wethersfield

Wethersfield was constructed during that late 1950's in several phases. Designed to be marketed to the returning GI's of the Korean War and the veterans of World War II, it was the largest residential development in Bellingham's history. It's impact was felt for the next thirty years. Affordable houses with many children do not produce tax dollars sufficient to educate those children. This development along with several others were primary causes of the financial difficulties that the town had through the mid 1990's.
 

The Wethersfield homes were durable, far more than predicted. Today the homes advertised in the enclosed brochure can be found on the market for anywhere from $190,000 to $250,000.
 

The nicely landscaped center park and its communal swimming pool were constructed, but no one paid their dues and the developer, Campanelli and Cardi, found it more profitable to fill in the pool and sell off the remainder of the house lots. Of course the plans on file at the Norfolk County Registry of Deeds never did show a park and a pool. A little bait and switch perhaps.
